Wine happens to be one of the great mysteries of the world to me. In fact, although I've spent quite a bit of time in Napa and done all the wine appreciation things that one is supposed to do; I simply am not into it enough to figure out how to pair this with that. For the most part, I find a type that I like (Merlot or Port for example) but, I doubt if I'll ever develop a knowledge that will actually tell me the real difference between a glass that comes from a cheap, mass produced, screw top bottle and a Château Lafite. While I may not have developed the same level of snobbery with regards to my wine that I do with my coffee or cigars; I'm never one to turn down an opportunity to try something new.
Recently, I found out that there are three wines that are available only at your local fresh & easy (in the interests of full disclosure; I did get to sample each for free...helping to grease the wheels of my interest).
- La Gioiosa Prosecco - At around $7 a bottle this is a crisp sparkling wine which is perfect for toasting the masses at your holiday party. Very aromatic and crisp...good compliment to a crisp cool night.
- Hilltown Chardonnay - Slight vanilla and citrus notes, leaves a taste of honey on your palate. I may not be the sharpest knife in the drawer when it comes to wine but, this would go great with your holiday meal of duck or turkey.
- Castillo Rioja - I like merlot and now, I like this too! If you are serving a roast then this is the dark, red, rich compliment that you want to that entrée. Very complex, not the normal type of thing that I'd expect to find for about $7 at my grocery store...
Happy Holidays, everyone!
